From his birth in 1850 GWI lives in the Wolf Lake, Ligonier, Cromwell, and Albion areas of Noble County Indiana. He marries in 1871. Records show a son (Charley) born in 1879 in Cromwell. This is the last child born in this area. 16

The 1880 census has GWI in Washington Township of Noble county with his occupation listed as Druggist.

It is not known what happened to the Drug Store or the family farm.

GWI and family are in Walkerton, Indiana between 1881 and 1885. His occupation on Pha’s birth certificate is Livery worker (stablehand)16

From about 1886 to 1902 the Jones family is in South Chicago, Illinios. Ben, Rachel, George, and Robert are all born during this time. 16

1900 Census has the family living in Chicago (Precinct 4, Hyde Park Township, Chicago City Ward 33, Cook, Illinois.12

Family has various addresses while in Chicago. Tradition says they ran a music store in Chicago. Both CV and Hazel, the eldest children, will have strong musical backgrounds. CV will make a career in the Piano industry and Hazel is an accomplished pianist. The family grand piano is still in the possession of the Dorene Kenkman Family.

According to one family history the family came to Seattle in 19018

No records of GWI and family in Chicago in the 1902 City Directory. 1902 GWI is working with the Electric Milling and Mining Co. (Chicago and Colorado) on a mining claim in Springer Colorado. Springer is now known as Lake George.25 There is a Springer Gulch Campground It is not known where he is living at this time16

Family spent time in Spokane and Portland before or after moving to Seattle.

Mike Woodley has a postcard dated 1903 sent to GWI Jones at 502 Melrose Ave Seattle, WA, to 304 24th Ave S in 1906 (Near Randell home) and 619 E. Pike St in 1905.

Family is in Spokane, Washington in 1906 according to William Jones9 The family papers have a note from Robert Jones to Emma (Jones) Randell in Seattle which was sent from Spokane Washington Sept. 23, 1906.

Earliest record of family living at 712 in Seattle is the 1907 Seattle Phonebook which lists GWI Jones at 712 31st Ave S and has his occupation as Real Estate.

One of his entries in his diaries for June 20, 1909 says, “I went to West Seattle today, the first time I have been there in 3 years,” indicating GWI had been in Seattle as early as 1906.16

In 1908 family is in Seattle, Washington - 712 31st Ave S.5

Much of Spring 1908 is spent remodeling and expanding the 712 home. GWI Diary

July 1908 - became W.Oregon contracted representative for Coast Light Company selling gas machines.

Aug 19, 1908 While in Portland for work, visited the Yeo family house. Bessie was there, others out of town. GWI Diary

Aug 21, 1908 “I am feeling a little discouraged in my business, times seems to be getting hard, and the people complain. This always my luck though, to get in just before the bottom falls out.” GWI Diary

Nov 1908 “The Randells and Denholms (James, half brother to George Randell) are upstairs now, I will go up and see them.”

1910 Census has GWI living alone in Seattle at 712 house, none of the rest of the family are listed but according to his journal Ben is at home working part time or looking for work. During much of the year LaDora and Robert are back east visiting family. Pha and his wife Bess, Rachel and CV are living in Vancouver BC during this time, CV was working for Mason-Rish and was residing in BC.26 Not sure where George is residing at this time, but he is sending letters to GWI.5

GWI has the house raised and a foundation installed 1910. Between 1910 and 1915 family will be working on the house completing the lower level and finishing many other improvements.5

The family would also spend much time in Vancouver, Canada 1995 Beach Ave Vancouver

While in the Northwest GWI works for the Gas Company selling “gas machines and lights” and appears to selling and investing in Real Estate. Money appears quite short in his diaries and he is living off checks sent regularly by his eldest son Clarence Victor.16

From personal papers of Marcia Aurelius:
"Gram's husband GWI wasn't very successful in business and changed jobs alot. Ran a drugstore, sold pianos, organs (Chicago), inherited from his father. Don't know if he played any instruments. Sold some Real Estate. Off and on drinking had influence on his life. Too bad. A nice fellow and he and Gram loved each other. All the male children ended up drinking except CV.8

GWI kept daily diaries. Four volumes are still in existence:
