DAVID AND SUSANNAH (PIPER) PADEN arrived in 1831 from Clark County, Ohio. The Padens opened a grocery and provision store in a little log cabin, making Paden one of the first merchants in Dayton. They later opened a dry goods store in a building which they erected on the southwest corner of Walnut and Conjunction streets. The picture in the 1878 Atlas shows a large, white, two-story frame building. Sons William and John and son-in-law Henry Bayne helped in the business. Eventually the business passed to grandson Marvin. Since John lists his occupation as teaming in 1850, they may have brought supplies in by wagon, probably from Cincinnati. Next to the store, David and Susannah Paden built the brick house where Earl and Miriam Russell lived in recent years (now owned by Don Kohler). Later, J. M. and Lou Diebert lived in the brick house. The Dayton Carriage Company occupied the store building for a time. In later years the building housed several businesses, including a carriage repair, a restaurant, the trustee’s office, and a barber shop. The Padens were members of the Universalist church.
