Misc. Notes
Martin Skophammer
Although Martin Skophammer had been ill for about six weeks and critically for the last few days, the announcement of his death at 6 o'clock Thursday night came as a surprise to his many friends in Albert Lea which has been his home for the last fifteen years.
He was a familiar figure on our streets and his business integrity won him many steadfast friends here. If he would have lived the 20th of this month he would have been 48 years old.
The deceased was a native of Freeborn county having been born in 1864 in the town of Bancroft.
His father was Peter Skophammer, who was a resident of the town until his death.
He was married in 1894 to Miss Emma Hammer, who died twelve years ago leaving a son then two years old.
About twenty three years ago Mr. Skophammer went to Butte, Montana where he stayed for a year and a half, working for a mining company, but returned to his home at Bancroft.
Coming to Albert Lea in 1901 he purchased the feed barn that stands in the rear of the Wedge-Jones building and and conducted the business until three years ago when he sold out and finished Pat Dolan's term as street commissioner. Later he was appointed state highway inspector for his county but ill health prevented him keeping the appointment. He has been an inspector of the paving in the city and until work of the city dam and bridge closed in Jan. he was inspector.
He is survived by his son, Grant, 14 years old, his mother, his sister, Miss Anna Skophammer of this city, his brothers, Jens and August both living in Albert Lea, a brother Peter who lives in Bancroft.
The funeral will be held at 1:30 Sunday afternoon from the residence, 422 Euclid street and from the Synod Lutheran church at 2 o'clock.
The body will be buried in the cemetery of the Central church at Bancroft, the family burial ground.
