San Jose Evening News 10-11-1900, p. 5: "In San Francisco, October 10, 1900, Mrs Mattie Hunt of Visalia, wife of S B Hunt, mother of Mrs M C Zumwalt of Tulare, Evelyn, Lillie, Claude and Clarence Hunt, a native of Californial, aged 54 years. San Jose Evening News 10-13-1900 says she died of a surgical operation, born May 1848, laid beside her mother in Oak Hill Cemetery, said to have been the oldest native daughter in this state. One daughter, Eva, a trained nurse at Lane Hospital, another, Lily, keeping house in Berkeley for the younger son, who is attending school in the college town." Tombstone inscription includes "25 May 1847 - 10 Oct 1900, Erected by the women of Woodcraft."103
