1880 Census - Occupation Teaching School
Elias appears twice in the 1880 census: Once he is living with his parents & teaching school in Noble, Noble, IND. The 2nd time, he is living alone in Ligonier, Noble, IND, and again working as a school teacher.
There is no mention of his wife, Catherine, whom he is reported to have married in 1879. She seems to be living with her mother & stepfather in Noble, Noble, IND. Catharine Jones is reported with David & Lettecia Clark. With them are Catherine's brothers Fredrich & Martin Kimble, cousin Arrilla Beall & aunt Drusill Beall.
According to the pension file of Elias' uncle, Newman Whittecar, who married Catherine in 1902, Catherine & Elias were divorced in 1883.
Elias' middle name comes from the online marriage record of his daughter Loucelle (or Lucille). She was reported to be the daughter of Catherine Kimble & Shephard Jones. His parents' obituaries , written in 1891, state that Elias was living at that time in Grand Traverse City, Michigan. On May 10, 1883, it was reported in the Grand Traverse Herald that Elias Jones of Leland was granted a 3rd grade certificate. In the Sept. 4, 1884 issue of the Grand Traverse Herald, E. S. Jones is listed as a teacher with a 2nd grade certificate which expires Sept. 11, 1885. Elias S. Jones was also listed (along with his wife) as a teacher with a certificate for Leelanaw County.
In 1900, "Elas" S. Jones & his wife Elnora are living in Grand Traverse, Grand Traverse, Michigan. His birth month & year are reported to be Apr 1864 (!) & he is working as a farmer. Elnora reports that she is the mother of 1 living child.
Elias appears in the 1910 census in Traverse City, Grand Traverse, Michigan. The census reports that he is 55, b. in Indiana, with both his parents born in Ohio. Elias is working as a teacher. The only thing that doesn't fit is that it also states that he has only been married once, 26 years before.
