Misc. Notes
MOE, Marie Louise (Age 92) Marie Louise Moe (Tunby) passed from this world of natural causes on Sunday, December 13, 2020, at the age of 92. She lived a long life of service, appreciation of the arts, and caring for family. She is survived by her children and their spouses: David (Micki), Don (Maggie), Linda (Dennis), Rob (Clare) and Jon (Pam), as well as 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and two brothers, Maurice and Rolf Tunby. She is preceded in death by her parents, Helga Nygaard and Hieronymus “Rony” Tunby, her infant sister and infant brother, and her siblings Gordon, Edith, Helen, Roy and Elphie. She was beloved by family and friends and set an example for us all through her kindness, generosity and love of learning, and never spoke negatively about anyone. She went by many names: Marie, Mom, Nana Moe, Grandma and our favorite, Montana Marie. Marie was passionate about many things; she was a longtime member of the League of Women Voters, and volunteered at polling places for many years. She worked with Lutheran Family Child Services, and Diakonia, a group dedicated to helping the disad- vantaged. It was her strong faith that motivated her life of service. She was an avid fan of opera music, a member of Opera Buffs, and enjoyed travelling out of town to see opera productions. She loved symphonic music, and she volunteered with the Spokane Symphony Associates. A special joy was that her grandson Eric became a member of the Spokane Symphony! Marie was born in Westmore, Montana on December 29, 1927. She grew up on the family farm near Westmore with three sisters and four brothers. Growing up during the Depression in eastern Montana instilled a tenacity and work ethic in Marie that family and friends witnessed throughout her life. She studied nursing in college, then became a mother and homemaker after her marriage to Henry Moe in 1948. She raised five children, then returned to school at the age of 53. She finished her studies and became a medical secretary. Marie enjoyed travelling, and even in her 80s would travel to see her siblings, her children and grandchildren. When her children were young the family lived in West Virginia and then Seattle, before moving to Spokane. In 1966 the family moved to Africa, living near Accra, Ghana for almost two years. In 1974 the family also enjoyed a summer in Jamaica, while Henry was working there. Marie was a lifelong Lutheran, attending Messiah Lutheran on Spokane’s north side for many years, and later St. Mark’s, on Spokane’s south side. It was important to her to maintain the friendships she developed in all her activities. She had many friends at church, and friends at Harvard Park and Riverview Terrace in Spokane, where she lived in her later life, before moving to Mukilteo Sunset Adult Family Home north of Seattle, Washington. Donations or gifts in Marie’s memory can be directed to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, the Spokane Symphony, or Lutheran Community Services.
