She was born in Virginia, daughter of Arnold Custer and Bridget Strauder Custer. She married John Runyan about 1770 in Augusta Co., Virginia now Pendleton Co., West Virginia. It is said they were parents of 10 children: Bridget, John, Jr., William, Abraham, Ruie (Ruth), Jane, Joseph, George, Anna, and Elizabeth. The reverse side of the Runyan Memorial placed at her grave site, however, lists seven children: John, Jr., William. Ruie (Ruth), Abraham, Joseph, George, and Anna, (in order of birth).
Some Runyans say she was the first female to be buried in Asbury Cemetery. However, at least one female who died over two years before Susannah. The female found is Dorothy Baird with an old gravestone showing a death date of 1 September 1821, and there may be others whose stones are missing.
Although her husband and the children are listed on the memorial stone they are not buried with her. They are all buried elsewhere, so this would be considered a "Cenotaph" for them. For some reason all children are not listed on the stone.
