Harland Myron Bestul, 92, a Portage County native, died Sunday, July 14, 2013, in Stordock Hall at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King.

Mr. Bestul was born April 19, 1921, on the family farm in Portage County, a son of the late Robert and Rebecca (Hanson) Bestul.

He was a World War II veteran, serving nearly four years with the 776th Tank Destroyer Battalion in Europe. He was a sergeant and tank commander, serving in North Africa, Italy, Germany, Austria and France. He was awarded numerous medals, including the Bronze Star.

He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.

He was married to Elaine J. Trinrud on Nov. 24, 1945, at the Farmington Lutheran Church in the town of Farmington in Waupaca County. She preceded him in death.

They lived in Wisconsin Rapids for a time, then farmed in the town of Harrison in Waupaca County before moving to Waupaca for employment at the Whales Paper Company.

They later moved to the Fox Valley to work at the Bergstrom Paper Company until his retirement.

He served on the Harrison Center School Board and was president of the papermakers union for many years.

In retirement they moved to Amherst, and he was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Darlene (Garry) Snell, Waupaca; one daughter-in-law, Sharon (Gordon) Bestul-Peterson, Scandinavia; three sisters, Evangeline Biederman-Gill, Ruth Jones and Crystal (Richard) Anderson; five grandchildren including Kelly (Lance) Nelson, Stevens Point; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by one son, Daniel Roger; one sister, Geraldine Oligney-Recker; two brothers, Phillip and Earl; and one granddaughter.
