Stella Ashley, 101, Minot, ND, formerly of Velva, ND, passed away Friday, June 29, 2018, in a Minot hospital.
Stella Anne Lee was born December 28, 1916, the daughter of Albert and Susie (Wolhowe) Lee, on the family farm near Verendrye, ND. She attended the Rural Oak Valley and Falsen Township Schools in Verendrye, and won the ND State Spelling Contest in the 8th grade. She graduated from Velva High School in 1933.
Stella attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN for one year, then attended Minot State College where she received her Teaching Certificate. She later completed her Bachelors in Education Degree at Minot State.
Stella married Monroe Ashley on January 11, 1941 in Sidney, MT. Early on in their marriage they made their home in Verendrye and also Tucson, AZ where Monroe was stationed with the Army Air Corps.
The couple later returned to ND where Stella taught school, first in a rural school house south of Dickinson, ND, then later in Verendrye and Velva for a number of years. Stella also farmed with Monroe near Verendrye until their retirement. The couple then moved into Velva for a time before moving into assisted living in Minot.
Monroe passed away May 28, 2003.
Stella was a member of Oak Valley Lutheran Church of Velva, Pioneer Daughters, Homemakers Club, North Dakota Education Association and the International Reading Association.
Surviving family includes:
Sons, Stephen (Ann) Ashley, Minot and David (Jo) Ashley, Voltaire; grandchildren, James, Lynn, Carisa and Jennifer; 9 great-grandchildren, brother, Wayne Lee; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Stella was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Monroe Ashley; and her sisters, Norma and Ellen.
