Monroe Ashley, 90, Velva, died Wednesday in a Minot nursing home.

He was born August 29, 1912, north of Towner, McHenry County, ND, to John Henry and Josephine (Dahl) Ashley. He attended school in Towner. Monroe's father passed away when he was six years old. His mother later married John Colby Sr.

Monroe studied Auto Mechanics at the North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton. He later returned to the family farm south of Verendrye, to work with his stepfather . On January 11, 1941, he married Stella Lee Ashley in Sydney, Montana. They lived in Verendrye where Monroe owned and operated the People's Garage.

In 1942, he entered the Army Air Corps and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and returned to North Dakota. He worked at General Machine Company in Minot until they moved to Stella's family farmstead, north of Verendrye, in 1949. They farmed and ranched there until moving to Velva in 1979. He always maintained an active interest in agriculture. Monroe and Stella had just moved into Minot and were residing at Brentmoor.

He was a member of Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva and was active on the Verendrye School Board.

Survivors: wife, Stella, Minot; sons, Stephen M. Ashley and wife, Ann and David W. Ashley and wife Jo, all of Voltaire; four grandchildren, James Ashley, Fort Washington, MD, Lynn Ashley, Fargo, Carisa Ashley and Jennifer Ashley, both of Voltaire; half-brother, Paul Colby and wife Irene, Voltaire and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather; three sisters, Florence Loken, Pearl Pearson and Orpha Rafferty; brother, Gordon Ashley and half-brother, John Colby.

Funeral: Saturday, 11:00 a.m. at Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva.

Visitation: Friday from 3-7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Velva.

Burial: Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, rural Verendrye.
