Misc. Notes
Eugene LeRoy Meyers is the oldest son of Cyril Hope Meyers and Babette Olive Wilson. He was born in Washington, D.C. When World War II began in Europe, he enlisted in the U.S. Army on 2 Oct 1940--more than a full year before the United States became involved in the war following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He remained in the Army until he was discharged 24 June 1945 [U.S. Headstone Applications for Military Veterans, 1861-1985, Ancestry.com]. On 2 April 1947 Eugene married Ruby Mae Griggs in a ceremony at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. James L. Griggs in Washington, D.C. [(1) District of Columbia Marriages. Clerk of the Superior Court, Records Office, Washington D.C. Ancestry.com. Washington, D.C., U.S., Marriage Records, 1810-1953. (2) "Meyers-Grigs," Evening Star (Washington, District of COlumbia), 1 June 1947.]

In the 1950 U.S. Census for Washington, D.C., Eugene was identified as a "cartographer" working for the government, which suggests he worked at U.S. Geological Survey in Washington, D.C. Eugene died in Pennsylvania on 28 June 1972. The circumstances and cause of his death are not known from public records now available. June 28 was on a Wednesday, and it could be that his death was associated with his employment. He was buried in the Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Prince George's County, Maryland, which is immediately adjacent to the District of Columbia. The Veterans Administration provided a bronze plaque for his grave acknowledging his military service. The couple did not have any children.
