Robert Humphreys emigrated in company with his two brothers Samuel and Richard, from Tyrone county, Ireland in 1780, and fisrt located in Philadelphia, whence they shortly afterward moved to Greenbrier county, VA. John Humphreys was the son of this Robert, was born in Ireland, Mar 1764 and came to America with his father before the Revolution.
On the 25th of Nov 1790, John Humphreys was married in Virginia to Jane Ward. Her father, Capt. James Ward, was a man of marked courage and reputation in the Indian Wars, and fell in the memorable battle of Point Pleasant, in 1774 where the power of the Indians was broken. John and Jane Humphreys removed from Virginia to Mason co, KY in 1795, locating near Washington. In 1799 they removed toOhio, with Simon Kenton, Wm Moore and William Ward, among other families who settled near Springfield, where they built a fort in consequence of the hostility of the Indians. The Humphreys were Presbyterians in Ireland and kept the faith in America.
John Humphreys assisted in the organization of the first Presbyterian church in Springgield, in 1819 and was elected Deacon whichposition he held ulntil disab;ed bu p;d age He died on the 19th of March 1857, at the great age of 93 years. He son the late Robert Humphreys, was born in Mason co in the year 1795, and was taken by his parents to their home near Springfield, where a part of his childhood wa passed in the fort, and his boyhood amidst the perils of the frontier settlement.
