Caroline Margarette Haugen, 100, of Devils Lake, ND formerly of Maddock, ND, passed away Monday, August 6, 2018 at the Eventide Heartland Care Center in Devils Lake, ND. Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday August 11, 2018 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in rural Minnewaukan with Pastor Allen Campbell officiating. Visitation will take place from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM Friday August 10, 2018 at the Nelson Funeral Home in Maddock and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Music will be provided by Arlyss Bergrud and Turi Hanson. Casket Bearers will be Steve Hagen, Curtis Hanson, Clay Haugen, Kelly Carrington, Ben Tufte and Andy Hillier. Burial will be held in the St. Olaf Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Caroline Margarette Haugen, daughter of Ida (Skadeland) and Elmer Ellingson, was born March 11, 1918 in Ridgeway, Iowa. She was baptized March 31, 1918 at Madison Church in Decorah, Iowa. The family moved to North Dakota when she was 2 years old to a farm near Minnewaukan. Caroline graduated from Minnewaukan High School in 1939. On October 6, 1940, she married Norman Dalton Haugen at St Olaf Church in rural Minnewaukan. They then moved to Duluth, MN. In 1943 they moved to Grand Forks and in 1944 to Minneapolis. Norman went into the Navy and at this time she returned to help her parents manage the hotel in Minnewaukan. In 1946-1969, they lived in Duluth, Bemidji, Minneapolis, Denver and back to Minneapolis. They belonged to First Lutheran Church in Bemidji, Our Saviors in Duluth, Westwood Lutheran in St Louis Park, and House of Hope in New Hope, MN.
Caroline worked in the school systems in St Louis Park, Denver, and New Hope. In the summers she also worked at the Minneapolis golf club. She retired in 1979 and in 1986 they moved back to Maddock to be closer to family. This is when they joined St Olaf Lutheran Church. Caroline belonged to St Olaf WELCA, VFW, American Legion Auxiliary, Viking Homemakers, AAL and volunteered at Senior Meals. Norman passed away on August 23, 2007 at Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake, ND. Caroline resided in Maddock until moving into Heartland Care Center in August 2014.
Caroline loved entertaining and would often have friends and family around her table. She took great pride in her table settings. She loved her grandchildren and nothing made her smile more than a hug or a kiss from them. She was known as quite a prankster. She loved having kids come to her door for Halloween and would even dress up herself. She loved cooking, baking, and crocheting. She and Norman enjoyed traveling and camping with family and grandkids. Church was a very important part of her life as faith got her through the difficult times. Her philosophy on life was, “Do good for others, not expecting something in return. “
She is survived by her three children Loren (Laurie Windjue) Haugen of Red Lodge, MT, Dennis (Dana Easter) Haugen of Denver, CO and Maddock, ND, Gail (Ray) Giesinger of Detroit Lakes, MN, grandchildren Shareen (Justin) Roberts, Oberon, ND, Donnie (Stephanie) Buckmier, Maddock, ND, Amanda Moffett Lakewood Ranch, FL, Carly (Kelly) Carrington, Laurel, MT, Clay Haugen Chicago, IL, Jennifer (Shane) Richards, Moorhead, MN, Marissa (Josh) West, Moorhead MN, John Giesinger Fargo, ND, 12 great-grandchildren, Kristen Hillier, Caroline Tufte, Alex Windjue, Jamie Buckmier, Reagan Moffett, Cooper Haugen, Robert,Rylie and Logan Richards, September Giesinger, Bentley and Kensley West and 4 great-great-grandchildren, Beckett and Aurora Hillier and Olivia and Isabelle Tufte.
She was preceded in death by her husband Norman, her parents Ida and Elmer Ellingson. her brother Vernon Ellingson, and sisters Ella Kalinoski and Anna Mae Prichard.
