The funeral for Norman Haugen, 92, of Maddock was held August 26 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, rural Minnewaukan. He died Aug. 23, 2007 at the Heartland Care Center in Devils Lake.
Pastors Betty Stedman, Richard Budd and Paul Idstrom officiated. Vocalists were Curt, Deb and Turi Hanson and Arlyss Bergrud. Margaret Toso was organist. Casket bearers were Jim and Steven Hagen, Donnie Buckmier, Larry and Jim Haugen, Curt Hanson, Justin Roberts, Dave Holje and Terry Hermanson. Honorary bearers were grandchildren Shareen (Justin) Roberts, Donnie Buckmier and Amanda Buckmier and Carly and Clay Haugen; and great-grandchildren Kristen, Alexis and Jamie Buckmier and Carolyne Hillebrand. Military rites were accorded by the Theodore A. Togstad American Legion Post 123 of Maddock. Interment was in the church cemetery. The Nelson Funeral Home of Maddock was in charge of arrangements.
Norman Dalton Haugen was born June 11, 1915 to Rudolph and Palma (Dahl) Haugen at Crary. He was baptized and confirmed in the Crary Lutheran Church. Following graduation from the Crary High School he began doing optical work for Dr. Wold in Devils Lake. He married Caroline M. Ellingson Oct. 6, 1940 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, rural Minnewaukan. They lived in Duluth, Minn., where he worked for Benson Optical. In 1943 they moved to Grand Forks, where he taught electronics to servicemen at UND. They moved to Minneapolis, Minn. in 1944, where he was employed by Northwest Airlines in their radio department which was connected with military service and later that year he entered the US Navy as a radio technician. Following his discharge in 1946 he returned to Duluth and resumed his career with Benson Optical. He transferred to Bemidji, Minn. in 1949 to be a branch manager, then back to Minneapolis in 1952 to manage Benson Laboratory. In 1967 he transferred to the Denver, Colo. office and was involved with the research and development of new lens processing procedures. He returned again to Minneapolis in 1969 to manage store design and installation programs until retiring from Benson Optical in May of 1979. They moved to Maddock in 1986. He became a resident of Heartland Care Center at Devils Lake in June of 2005.
He was a member of churches in Minneapolis and Denver, served as president of House of Hope Lutheran Church in Minneapolis and also taught Sunday school for over 30 years. After moving to Maddock, he joined St. Olaf Lutheran Church, taught the adult Bible study and served as church secretary. He was a member of the Benson County Amateur Radio Club, the Theo. A. Togstad American Legion Post 123 of Maddock, the Elks, The Maddock Golf Club and the Maddock 55 Club, where he had served as president.
Survivors include his wife of Maddock; two sons, Loren (Laurie) Haugen of Red Lodge, Mont. and Dennis (Dana Jene Easter) Haugen of Maddock; a daughter, Gail (Ray) Giesinger of Fargo; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
