Misc. Notes
According to Frances Puckett Going to Ohio [Los Gatos Daily Times 11-30-1953], Julia was 14 at the time her father died in 1850. Julia was listed as Julia A Jones b. OH in the 1852 CA census (see notes on her mother). A Julia A Jones m. Joseph W Johnson on 12/27/1852, all parties being from San Jose, CA (ancestry.com CA marriages). Because Julia A Jones was the only Julia Jones listed in the October 1852 census for Santa Clara County, and because Julia A Jones married Joseph W Johnson two months later, she is certainly the same woman. This Joseph W Johnson was b. 10-29-1818 in NC and arrived in CA on 10-10-1849. He was San Jose sheriff 1852-53 and mayor 1861-63. He died 3-22-1880 in San Jose. In 1860 J W Johnson 39 b. NC, justice of the peace, lived in San Jose with Willie C b. CA and Nellie H 2 b. CA. In 1870 Joseph W Johnson 51 b. NC, justice of the peace, lived in San Jose with Willie C 14 and Nellie H 12. Evidently the Julia A Jones to whom he was married died between 1858 and 1860.

An article in the San Jose Evening News, 8-21-1899, v. XXXVI, issue 60, p. 5: "Mrs Julia A Johnson, wife of Judge Joseph W Johnson, died in San Jose over forty years ago. She left property at the corner of Alameda and Race streets, which has now passed through various hands. It is now found that the title is not perfect.... The lands and improvements are now valued at $50,000. By the terms of Mrs Johnson's will th entire estate was devised to her husband, who was appointed sole executor. The will was admitted to probate ahortly after Mrs Johnson's death, but there all proceedings stopped and the property was sold by the executor. For many years the informality in the court proceedings was overlooked, but recently the critical eye of a San Francisco attorney in running over the record detected the forty-year-old flaw...."103
