Newspaper story about Francis D Puckett quotes her as saying that her grandmother Frances waa a sister of Grace Wightman. Worth Jones lived with the Wightman family after his father died. The story Francis Puckett Goes to Ohio [Los Gatos Daily Times 11-30-1953] says that Frances Jones "was a college woman (which was less usual in 1850 than it is today), and an artist and a musician. This woman of refined tastes and gentle habits left Savannah [Andrew County], Missouri, to come to California with her attorney-husband and her children in 1850." For her surname see notes on her sister Grace Wightman and notes (death certificate) of Leon E Jones, in which the surname is spelled Andrus.
Images in the 1852 California State Census for Santa Clara County, taken in October, on microfilm range in quality from unreadable to very poor. Fortunately, p. 98, with the Jones family, is only very poor. The data below agree with the DAR transcription (on Santa Clara Historical & Genealogical Society) except for Julia's age, which it has as 12. Frances Jones 33 b. CT, widow, lived in San Jose with Julia A 16, Leon E 11, and Worth 7; all children b. OH, and all previously resided in MO. Also listed on the same page, nine names down, are Joseph W Johnson and, two names down, Zachariah Jones and family [probably the brother of Isaac N Jones]. I interpret the children's birthstates to indicate that Julia, who is listed just below her mother, was indeed b. in Ohio, which makes sense, and that the census taker "dittoed" the other children.
In 1860 J A Jones 30 b. NY, dairyman, was living in Monterey Twp, Monterey, CA with Francis S 25 b. ME and Ella 3 b. CA, but that's obviously the wrong family.103
