Mary Jane was born December 15, 1926 in Mandan to Charles F. and Jennie (Bestel) Pierce. Raised and educated in Mandan, she graduated from Mandan High School in 1944. She then attended Carlton College before transferring to the University of North Dakota. Mary Jane had met Leland G. “Chub” Ulmer before attending UND, but the two were reacquainted there and later married on September 11, 1948 in Mandan. They made their home in Mandan where they raised their family. Family was the most important thing to Mary Jane, especially her grandchildren. She rarely missed their events. A beautiful woman, inside and out, she took pride in her appearance and kidded that she was a “professional shopper”. Mary Jane enjoyed going to the family cabin at Lake Tschida with family and friends. Her strong Christian faith was evident in her life and she was an active member of First Presbyterian Church and enjoyed attending prayer group. She was active in PEO, volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, and served on the board of HIT, Inc. Mary Jane had a wonderful sense of humor and remained positive even through all of her health struggles. A loving mother, grandmother, and friend, Mary Jane will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Mary Jane was preceded in death by her loving husband “Chub” in July 1998; her parents; sister, Margaret Toman; son-in-law, Keith Kuller; and nephew, Charles Huddleson.

The family is so grateful for the special care from her in-home care giver and angel, Eunice Modin, who assisted the family in allowing Mary Jane to remain in her home. Also much appreciation to her granddaughter, Melissa Ulmer Burklund, for all of the tender loving care to Grandma Ulmer.

The family prefers memorials to the First Presbyterian Church Mission Fund.
