Obituary
Ernie was born March 10, 1919 at Crary, North Dakota, the son of Rudolph and Palma Haugen. He grew up and attended his schooling in Crary, graduating from high school in 1936. He served in WWII, with the 106th Infantry Division, Northern France and Central European Campaigns. On October 92 1938 he was united in marriage to Bernice Spidahl in Crary. Ernie worked for 15 years with Super Valu Food Stores, in Aberdeen, SD, Bismarck, ND, Minot, ND, and Minneapolis, in positions for Retail Store Supervisor and Credit Operations. They owned and operated Haugen's Department Store in Parshall, ND, from 1953-1963. Following the sale of their department store, Ernie accepted a position with Gamble-Skogmo, Minneapolis, in the soft lines division. In 1964 they were transferred to the Minneapolis home office where Ernie worked as Credit Manager of the soft lines and in the area of new store development. In 1978 they moved to Willmar. For four years prior to his retirement he served as credit manager for VSC in Clara City.
He was confirmed in the Crary Lutheran Church, Crary, ND. At the time of his death he was a member of Vinje Lutheran Church, where he had served on the Stewardship and Worship Committees, and as head usher for several years.
While in North Dakota, he served as retail chairman of the Greater North Dakota Association, was active with DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America), associated with the University of Grand Forks. He served as Legion Commander in Parshall, President of the Civic Association, and as Chairman of their church council. He was a life member of the Elks, and a member of the VFW and American Legion. Ernie died on Tuesday at Rice Hospital at the age of 76 years.
Surviving is his wife, Bernice; children, Larry (and Sharon) Haugen, Austin, MN; James (and Brenda) Haugen, New Orleans, LA,- seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Also surviving is his brother, Norman (and Caroline) Haugen, Maddock, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister, and one son.
