Ethnic Germans had colonized this region south of the Vistula River in the 18th and 19th centuries. The region has ties to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, then became part of Prussia during the Polish Partions in the 18th Century (1772-1795) and ended up under Russian influence after the Treaty of Vienna in 1815, after the Napoleonic Wars (Congress Poland). It would stay under Russian control until the end of World War I when it became the independent nation of Poland.

Mrs Frieda Klein, 53, of 852 W 60th St, died Monday in a hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 o'clock tomorrow in the Zion American Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Pacific Lutheran under the direction of the Wiggen & Sons mortuary. Mrs. Klein was born in Poland. She came here in 1922 and was a power-machine operator for the Bemis Bag Co. She retired last year. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Thomas F. Jones, Seattle, and Mrs Melvin D. Thornquist, Edmonds, and five grandchildren. Mrs. Klein was a member of the Zion American Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Women's League. (The Seattle Times, Wednesday, March 2, 1960)
