Burton D. Axness, 88, of Chippewa Falls, passed away peacefully in the presence of his daughter at the Lutheran Home in River Falls on Friday, Aug. 14, 2015.
He was born Feb. 17, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois to Bjarne and Hilda (Carlson) Axness. He grew up in Chicago, where he attended Lane Tech Prep School before entering the US Army Air Corps. After two years of service to his country, he attended Wright Jr. College and in 1949, married Lorraine Hader.
In 1960, he moved with his wife and two daughters to Chippewa Falls to work for the Jim Falls Dairy, from which he would retire.
Burton was an active member of the community, particularly Chippewa Falls Rotary Club, the Elks Lodge and his church, Central Lutheran, and then Christ Lutheran Church. He was a devoted husband, father and proud grandfather who enjoyed golf, bowling, travel, playing cribbage and was always a fan of the Chicago Cubs.
He is survived by: his daughter, Carol Axness of River Falls; and two grandsons, Eric Spaeth, U.S. Army (Jessica Hofer Spaeth) and Dustin Spaeth, U.S. Navy.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; a sister, Marianne Cox; a brother, Kenneth Axness; a daughter, Karen Axness; and his belowed wife of 61 years, Lorraine on Feb. 6, 2011.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 21 at Christ Lutheran Church with the Rev. Mark Homp officiating. Military honors conducted by the Chippewa Falls Patriotic Council will immediately follow the service. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 20 at Pederson-Volker Funeral Chapel, Chippewa Falls and one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.
