Norman A. Nelson, age 78, of Drayton, North Dakota passed away Friday, March 30, 2012 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks after a courageousbatle with cancer. Norman Allard Nelson was born November 6, 1933 in Warren, Minnesota, the son of Allard and Lillian (Rasmussen) Nelson. He grew up on the family farm in Fork Township of Marshall County and attended a country school through 8th grade then graduated from Stephen High School in 1951. Norman served with the U.S. Army from April of 1953 until April of 1955.
He was united in mariage to Gloria E. Evenson on June 24, 1956 at the Drayton United Methodist Church. They resided in Drayton while Norman farmed for 51 years in Fork Township. He retired from farming in 2006.
Norman enjoyed hunting and fishing inhis younger years and spending winters in Arizona in his later years. He was a member of the Drayton United Methodist Church. Gloria died in 1991.
Norman is survived by daughter Nancy of Grand Forks; a son Brad of Drayton; a granddaughter Alexa of East Grand Forks, MN; a brother Marlyn (Sharon) of Richfield, MN and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Gloria, an infant daughter, Marjorie Lillian, a sister, Helen Mary means and a brother, Donald.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 3, at the Drayton United Methodist Church. Rev. Leroy Aufenkamp presided; music was provided by Karen Schumacher, organist and Shirley VanCamp, soloist. Casket Bearers were Tom Steenerson, John Byzewski, Josh Gebur, Dean Staskivige, Tyler Gebur and Gerry Beauchamp. Honorary Casket Bearers were Jim Cochran, Jerry Bratlie, Frank Staskivige, Don Holler, Jim Gebur and George Elhard. Interment was in the Drayton Cemetery.
Austin Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
