Goulden, 64, wasn't feeling well. He complained to bartenders at an Apache Junction American Legion Post that he had a headache and left following his friend, Vicki Hays.
Police said Goulden's car hit a light pole at about 8 p.m. in a median in the 11000 block of East Baseline Road, near Meridian Road. Hays said paramedics found Goulden dead.
Hays said it is believed Goulden, a retired Mesa barber, suffered a heart attack or a cerebral hemorrhage based on his medical history and previously reported symptoms.
"He had a heart of gold. He was wonderful to people," Hays said. "It was just bad luck. It was one of those things that happen. I'm thankful no one else was hurt."
