Marius studied English in England one year and German in Germany. He was preparing to go into customs work but his father, Christen Nygaard (1825-1901) opposed this. Instead Marius traveled to America in 1886 with his brother Einar. They homesteaded near Houghton So. Dak. and later Einar went to Canada. Marius worked on the railroad between Houghton and Oakes, No. Dak. Marius married Hanna Martine Dahl on June 17, 1888. in Columbia. They had knwn each other previously in Norway. He took several trips to Norway and one time (1900-1902) with the whole family and they lived there for 2 years before he wanted to return to the Houghton area. They were blessed with 5 children: Christen (Miriam Thomas), Helga (Rony Tunby), Rolfe (Fanny Schuyler), Wilhelmina (Joseph Johnson and Henry Yantz), Maurice (Dena). Marius lived in Houghton till his death of goiter complications.
