Eldon L. Stevens, emeritus professor of Philosophy at the Air Force Academy and UCCS died on December 28, 2006 after a valiant battle with cancer. Eldon was born June 17, 1920, the second oldest of eight children of Frank and Gladys Stevens. He grew up in Brainerd, Minnesota and entered the Army Air Corps in November of 1942, commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in May of 1943, rated as a Bombardier. His B-24 bomber crew was discharged and recalled in 1957 to Panama. After the war, he returned to the University of Minnesota, graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1948 and an MA in 1951. He earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1963. His doctoral work was the Danish writer Soren Kierkegaard. His teaching career began at the University of Minnesota. It included 13 years teaching philosophy at the Air Force Academy and 13 years at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. His excellent teaching was recognized in 1979 when he was selected for the campus-wide outstanding teaching award. Eldon is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Helen, brothers Charles (Charlene) Dale (Nancy) and sister Lorna Tabor (John.) Also surviving are his sisters-in-law, Eunice Graham & Darlene Stevens and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Murry and Vernon and Ruth Holecek and Avis Stroman. Services will be held at the Air Force Academy Chapel, 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 10, 2007. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Eldon's name to the Scholarship fund at UCCS or a charity of your choice. A loving husband, uncle and friend, Eldon will be remembered for his sense of humor, humanity and wisdom. He was an accomplished magician with a special love for trout fishing and back packing in the Colorado mountains.
