Janet McNair Nelson, of Brainerd, died peacefully on January 21, 2022, at the age of 92. She was born on October 16, 1929, to Murray and Cora McNair in Brainerd. Janet grew up in Pillager until moving to Brainerd in the 9th grade. She graduated from Brainerd High School in 1947. She attended and graduated from General Hospital School of Nursing, Minneapolis in 1950. She returned to Brainerd after graduation and worked at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd for about 20 years. Janet married John Nelson in 1950 in Brainerd, where they resided and raised 5 children. For the past 3 years Janet lived with her daughter and son-in-law in Brainerd until recently moving into Northern Lakes Memory Care.
Janet's hobbies, friends and family were her love for living. She is survived by her 5 children and families: Craig (Julie) Nelson of Shoreview, Kirstie (Jim) Klassen of Granite Falls, Kari (Dick) Jordan of Gilbert, Arizona, Erik (Chris) Nelson of Duluth and Karleen (Scott) Nelson-Richards of Brainerd. Also surviving her are 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and sister-in-law Carla McNair of Green Lake, WI. She is preceded in death by her husband, John, parents Cora and Albert Ostenso, biological father Murray McNair Sr, brother Murray McNair Jr, sister Donna Halac, brother John Ostenso, daughter-in-law DeeDee Nelson and grandson Christopher Nelson.
There will be no public service, although those who knew and loved her can leave remembrances of her at nelson-doran.com. In lieu of flowers, her family is asking that donations be made to Evergreen Cemetery Association, 1105 3rd Ave NE, Brainerd, MN 56401, (218) 829-5898 .
