SPANISH - AMERICAN WAR

Samuel Lock was a son of John (of VA) and Margaret L. (of PA) Lock and lived in Springfield, OH.
He enlisted in the 10th Ohio Infantry on 25 Jun 1898 and served as a Wagoner with Company E. He mustered out on 23 Mar 1899 at Camp McKenzie, GA.
-The 10th Ohio Volunteer Infantry was mustered into service between July first and seventh, 1898 at Columbus, Ohio, while the battles of San Juan Heights, El Caney, and the naval battle of Santiago were all occuring in Cuba. The 10th Ohio, however, was sent to camp Mead in Middletown, PA directly from Columbus, OH; Here, the unit was assigned to First Brigade, Third Division of the Second Army Corps. They arrived on August 12th, the day fighting had actually ended. The war officially ended on December 10 with the signing of the Treaty of Paris while the unit was still at Camp Mackenzie near Augusta, GA. The Unit mustered out of service on March 23, 1899 at Augusta.
During its term of service, the unit had 21 men die of disease, two die as the result of accidents, two men court-martialed and 28 men desert. In addition, 31 men were discharged on disability.


He married for the first time in 1908 and he and his wife Fern lived in German Township, Clark Co., OH where he was a farm laborer.
By January 1920 he moved to Enon, OH and and lived there with his wife and children; Genevia, Charles and Robert. He was a railroad worker in that year and by 1930 was employed by the Clark County Road Department.
