BROYLES, Richard W. passed away peacefully September 2, 2020 at age 83. Richard was born July 23, 1937 in Fairmount, Indiana to Clarence and Hazel (Welty) Broyles. He graduated from Fairmount High School, class of 1955.

"A mathematical genius was our pal Bobo Broyles, who possessed greater interest in cars than in 'goils'." -Black and Gold, 1955. He received his first degree, a B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering in 1959 from Tri-State University in Angola.

On March 26, 1960, he married Sharron Pearl Griffin of Flint, Michigan. He entered the U.S. Army in December 1960 and they were rejoined in December 1962. They had one son, Mark, born in 1965.

Richard had a lifelong passion for learning and earned a M.S. in Engineering in 1969 from The University of Alabama in Huntsville; a M.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics in 1971 from the University of Washington; and a Ph.D. in Engineering Science in 1985 from the University of South Florida.

His career in aerospace, defense and nuclear engineering, would take the family across the country including Huntsville, Alabama; Seattle, Washington; East Hartford, Connecticut; and Lynchburg, Virginia, before calling Tampa, Florida home since 1979 and finally retiring in Tampa.

He enjoyed running (consistently for 50 years) and hiking as well as his faith and religion. Richard's and Sharron's Christian faith was significantly important throughout their lives. They helped build three Nazarene churches, in Florissant, MO, Madison, AL, and Lynchburg, VA. In Tampa, the congregations of First Nazarene Church and Palma Ceia UMC were a vital part of their faith community.

Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Sharron; father, Clarence; mother, Hazel; and his brother, James. He is survived by his son, Mark, and his wife, Kathleen Ann (Stahl), and their five children, Kevin, Shawn, Dana, Julie and Sara, of Tampa, Florida. Burial will take place at Park Cemetery, Fairmount, Indiana, at a later date.
