Paul Raymond Colby was born October 17, 1926, a son of John William Colby and Josephine (Dahl) Ashley Colby, in Towner, ND. He attended schools in Towner and Verendrye. He graduated from Velva High School in 1945.

Paul married Irene M. Vogel in 1952. They made their home for more than 60 years on the family farm which was homesteaded by his father in 1903. The farm, located in Lebanon Township of McHenry County, was a founding member of Verendrye Electric Chartered Member #10 in January of 1940.

Paul loved the land and was meticulous in his care of it and of his beef cattle. In the early days he raised Herefords and more recently Black Angus.

Paul had a strong work ethic which he passed on to his children and any grandchildren who happened to spend summer time on the farm. He was a good teacher.

Paul enjoyed sports and hunting, and in his younger days, was an outstanding athlete and excellent marksman. Paul was a generous man, quiet, and unassuming. He was always willing to help those in need.

He was also a member of the American Legion, Eagles Aerie, Elks Lodge, and the Velva Senior Citizens. He served on the Board of Voltaire Farmers Elevator and served as chairman of the Lebanon Township Board of Supervisors.
