Mary E. Hawk, 89, a resident of rural Ligonier and widow of Woodward J. "Woody" Hawk, died at 6:07 a. m. Saturday, December 22, 2007, in Elkhart where she had resided with her daughter for the past two years.
Mrs. Hawk was born on a farm near Kimmell on May 3, 1918, a daughter of Orval and Marie (Piper) McLallin, and spent her formative years on the family farm there. She graduated from Wolf Lake High School in 1935, and later graduated from the International Business College in Fort Wayne.
As a young woman, she was the first bookkeeper for the Noble County REMC. On May 17, 1941 she was married in Merriam to Woodward J. "Woody" Hawk. She continued to work for the Noble County REMC during his military tenure during World War II, and following his military discharge, the couple moved to their farm home in York Township.
Along with her husband, the couple were engaged in farming in York Township all of their adult lives. She was a member of the Merriam Christian Chapel, was a homemaker, and was "a devoted wife and mother."
Mr. Hawk preceded her in death on December 17, 2001.
The surviving relatives include her two daughters Linda McClanahan of Bellville, Ohio and Patty Hawk of Elkhart; a brother Lewis (Genny) McLallin of Kimmell; and three grandchildren Sarah (Heyward) Armstrong and Emily (Nathan) Funk, both of Raleigh, NC, and Joshua McClanahan of LaBelle, Fla.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. Monday, December 24, 2007, at the Merriam Christian Chapel, with Pastor Steven Pulley, officiating.
The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday from 3 to 8 p. m., or one hour prior to the service Monday morning.
Interment will be in the Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam.
