Mary Elizabeth (Buckles) Young Schrader, 84, of Fort Wayne and formerly of Columbia City died Saturday, May 3, 2014, in Hospice Home, Fort Wayne with her family at her side.
She moved to Whitley County as a teenager from Indianapolis.
Mary began her career working as an x-ray technician at the Luckey Hospital in Wolf Lake. After her marriage to Carl Young, she and her husband operated Young's General Store in Burr Oak south of Albion with his parents and brothers. She later worked in the Noble County Treasurer's office, and retired as a bookkeeper for Columbia City Builders Supply in Columbia City.
Mary enjoyed the company of her cats and doing crossword puzzles. She loved getting together with her family anytime, but especially loved Christmas.
In 2008, she moved in with her son, Gage, who provided her with excellent loving care.
She was born October 1, 1929, in Greenfield, having been abandoned on a doorstep shortly after her birth. She spent the first two weeks of her life living in the Hancock County Jail under the care of the county sheriff. His wife named her Mary "Doe". She was soon adopted by Thomas and Pearl (Bristow) Buckles, and they kept the name Mary.
On September 19, 1949, in Whitley County she married Carl "Red" Young. He preceded her in death on December 9, 1958. Then, on May 14, 1966 she married H. Max Schrader. He preceded her in death on November 10, 1980.
Surviving are a daughter, Dianne (Alan) Baker of Fort Wayne; six sons, Michael Young of Tri Lakes, Pat (Kathy) Young of Kendallville, Jeff (Sherry) Young of Fort Wayne, Jim (Pam) Young of Fort Wayne, Gage Schrader of Fort Wayne, and Grant (Joelle) Schrader of Leo; ten grandchildren, Adam (Stephanie) Young of Millersburg, Beth (Donald) Mosley of Kendallville, James Young of Fort Wayne, Andy (Jeni) Young of Fort Wayne, Josh (Chrissy) Young of Fort Wayne, Tim (Joy) Young of North Manchester, Becci (fiancé, Fred Kunkel) Young of Fort Wayne, Joe Young of Fort Wayne, Alexa Schrader of Leo, and Mallory Schrader of Leo; ten great-grandchildren, Leanne Young, Carl Young, Sarah Young, Matthew Mosley, Mark Mosley, Michael Mosley, Luci Young, Logan Young, Colton Young, and Levi Young.
Funeral services will be Friday, May 9, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. in Young Family Funeral Home, Kendallville Chapel, 222 South State Street, Kendallville with Pastor Clare Jewell of Lakewood Park Baptist Church in Auburn officiating. Burial will be in Christian Chapel Cemetery in Merriam.
Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.
Calling is Thursday, May 8, 2014, from 2 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home and one hour prior to the services on Friday.
Preferred memorials are to the Ronald McDonald House Charities.
