WILL OF RACHEL McCUTCHEON COWAN
IN THE NAME OF GOD, AMEN: I, Rachel Cowan, of Champaign County in the State of Ohio, being affected in body but of perfect mind and memory, thanks be given to God, calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed unto all once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament, that is to say, punctually and first of all I give and recommend my soul to Almighty God; that gave it and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in a descent Christian manner and as touching such worldly estate as it has pleased God to bless me with::
I first give and bequeath to my son Miles Cowan the cow that is at William Kirkley's and one bee hive and unto my son James Cowan my part of the corn, the hay stack, two bee hives and two head of sheep, and unto my son William Cowan the gray mare by paying the remainder to Calvert for her, the large bible and Westminster Confession of Faith, the seive and all my hogs, one bee hive and his is to be the expense of my funeral, and to my son Thomas Cowan twelve dollars when collected of my dower and my blue dress for his wife.
And to my son John S. Cowan the bed I now lie on with the stead cord, the new quilt, cotton quilt, cotton sheet and bolster and striped blanket and unto my son David M. Cowan the rifle gun with the accouterments and to my daughter Caroline Cowan the other bed and as followers the stead cord, two coverlets, sheets, the white blanket, pillows and cases, the bureau and cupboard and furniture, the wheel and reel, my side saddle, umbrella, dutch oven and two head of sheep, the flatiron and the corn, cow and the hay that is in the mow, and to my daughter Mary (Polly) Kirkley four head of sheep, the table, three chairs, one bee hive, and my daughter Margaret Frankeberger, four head of sheep, my bonnet, and the remainder of the bed clothes and my wearing clothes to be divided between Polly and Margaret as they can agree between themselves.
Also to Caroline one half of the dried fruit and the remainder of the chairs, and it is my will that Deborah Smith should be well paid for nursing me.
I further appoint William Cowan my executor and I hereby certify and disavow, revoke and disannul all and every other will by me made. I give and bequeath ratifying and confirming this my last will and testament whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty-ninth day of September in the year of our Lord eighteen twenty-four.
