Services were held this afternoon at the Perryman Chapel for Mrs. Smith W. McPherson, 91, widow of former congressman and Federal Judge Smith W. McPherson, who died Thursday, August 5, 1948 at 4:30 p.m. in Murphy Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. McPherson fell at her home at 802 8th Street Tuesday evening and was taken to the hospital. She had been in poor health for several months.
Rev. Charles Kemp, pastor of the First Christian Church in Red Oak, officiated. Bearers were Dr. B. F. Spicer, Gordon Will, John L. Crofts, Thomas D. Murphy, Malcom D. Lomas, and Charles O. Briggs, Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery.
Born December 25, 1857 in Mahaska County, Iowa, she was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Edward Augustus Boyer. The last of her immediate family. Mrs. McPherson married Smith W. McPherson in Oskaloosa October 2, 1879. He died in Red Oak January 17, 1915 at 67.
A charter member of the Red Oak Monday Club, Mrs. McPherson was a member of the D.A.R. and the Mary Lyon Guild of Wemans Fellowship of the Congregational Church.
Judge and Mrs. McPherson attended President William Howard Taft's Inaugural Ball in Washington D. C. in 1900.
Civic Minded
Civic minded and socially prominent, Mrs. McPherson and Mrs. M. E. Fisher, formerly of Red Oak and now living in Des Moines, canvased Red Oak to raise money for four Montgomery County Court Clocks.
A resident of Red Oak since 1870, her husband was a representative from this district of Iowa in the 56th Congress. He was appointed as a federal judge from the Southern Iowa District by President William McKinley in 1900.
Mrs. McPherson had lived alone in the large sandstone home since her husband's death. The home was built in 1884 and is a landmark of early Red Oak.
Possessor of a keen mind and wit until her death, Mrs. McPherson faithfully cast her ballot during presidential years. She took a rabid interests in politics and world affairs. The McPherson were lifelong Republicans.
She is survived by two nieces, Mrs. Pidgeon Boyer Shaw of Oskaloosa and Miss Josephine Boyer of Anchorage, Alaska; three nephews, Hal Scott, Huntington Park, California; Rex Boyer of Wichita, Kansas, and Richard Boyer of Oskaloosa.
Several great nieces and nephews also survive.
