RESEARCH: From The Story of the Tabacco Plains Country. This was a lookup by
Michael davis dadmunk@pacbell.net

RESEARCH: Pam, _Yes, I think there are ways to put dates on the items from pages
158 and 159. According to the Social Security Death Index, there is a listing for a
Frances Filiatreau who was born 17 May 1895 and died 15 April 1967. Because it
shows her last address was in Eureka, Montana, this has to be the same Frances
Filiatreau who said Elsie Fenton was a teacher. If this occurred when Frances was
eight years old, then that would make the year approximately 1903. _As far as the
comment on page 159 is concerned, since the book was written in 1950, I have to
assume that's the period of time the author is speaking about, or perhaps 1949. That
would mean that Elsie Fenton Benda was working as a teacher in that year. _Iowa
Flats is not in my area. I live in Tracy, San Joaquin County, California. Iowa Flats is an
area in Lincoln County, Montana near the town of Eureka. Even though I have never
been in Montana, many of my relatives came from there. Coincidentally, my folks lived
in the Iowa Flats area also. It was called Iowa Flats because one group of settlers "
came from Iowa to Kalispell in the spring of 1899" (according to an entry on page 137
of the book). Iowa Flats is located northwest of the town of Eureka, north of Highway 37,
and west of Highway 93 (according to a map on the inside cover of the book). _Let me

know if you have any further questions.

Thanks. Is there any way to place the times on the page 158 and 159 happenings? Also,
is Iowa Flats a place in your area, or does that mean Iowa?My fentons were in Iowa,
and tradition says one was in Eureka in 1910, probably an Uncle to these if this turns
out the way I think. Anyway the assistance is appreciated.ThanksPam

Tobacco Plains Country _Pam, _Sure, no problem. _Page 157 is included in a
section on "Sinclair Creek Homesteads." At the bottom of the page, the beginning of
the last paragraph says: _"Jim Fenton, a former schoolteacher, whose wife was a
sister of Mrs. John Frost, came across from Iowa Flats to homestead on Sinclair Creek
just above the Joe Fredrickson millsite. Their daughter Elsie married Frank Benda, who
arrived about 1902 to homestead in the more open hills northwest of Sinclair Creek.
Frank's brother, Tom Benda, also homestead in this neighborhood."
Page 158 includes the reminiscences of a Frances Filiatreau, who begins: _"When I
was eight years old the few homesteaders got a school started in a one-room cabin on
what was known as the Lang place. The teacher was Elsie Fenton."
AND (I will have to update my index!), on Page 159 there is a sentence that says: _"
Elsie Fenton Benda, now well along in years, has responded to the current need for
teachers by returning to the work she loved."
I hope this was helpful.
