Misc. Notes
Buckles John George, 48, died at 10:25 a.m. Monday at the Luckey Hospital, Wolf Lake of a gunshot wound in the head. Unconscious with a wound from a 22 caliber rifle shot near the right temple, he was found at 7:30 a.m. in a cornfield on his farm by his wife and Melvin Wheeler of Etna. He was rushed to the Luckey Hospital but died without regaining consciousness. Mrs. Buckles told the coroner her husband left the house to do the chores about 5:15 a.m. and according to a common custom, took the rifle with him. Wheeler called at the farm to repair a pump and needing the assistance of Mr. Buckles, started a search. There was no direct evidence of suicide and the possibility exists that the fatal wound could have been suffered accidentally. A native of Washington Twp, he had resided in the Etna community 25 years. He operated a grocery at Etna 17 years, disposing of the business and moving to the farm last February. Surviving are the wife, Constance; two sons, Jack and Howard; a daughter, Rosalyn; the father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. George Buckles, Kimmell; two brothers, Robert H. and Franklin R., both Kimmell; and two sisters, Mrs. Fred Howard, Etna, and Mrs. Ray Wolfe. He was a member of the Etna-Troy Conservation Club, the Ormas Baptist Church and the Eagles Lodge of Columbia City. Funeral was Wednesday afternoon at Etna Methodist Church. Burial, Stringtown Cemetery. + 1943
