OLD AUCTIONEER DEAD
George Baker does not survive retirement long
Operation Performed Several Years Ago Weakened Vitality - Last Wishes are Gratified.
From the effects of a surgical operation which was performed several years ago and seriously affected his vitality George Baker, a well-known and veteran auctioneer, died at his home, 335 Hassalo street yesterday. He had expressed a desire to live until his 68th birthday and just managed to live 68 years and one day.
Mr. Baker, who was born in Devonshire, England, in 1843, was apprenticed to the cabinetmaker’s trade when he was 14 years old, and entered the auction and furniture business when he was 21 years old. He came to the United States in 1881 locating in Detroit. After several years in Detroit, came to Portland in 1892 and continued in business in one location at the southeast corner of Park and Alder Streets until last July, when he retired from his firm of George Baker & Co., to enjoy a well earned rest, after more than 53 years’ hard work. Mr. Baker’s health was so weak, however, that he had been virtually confined to his home since he left business.
Mr. Baker is survived by his widow, one son, Walter C. Baker, and these daughters; Mrs. William Yeo, Miss Amy Baker of Portland: Mrs. F. E. Skinner, now residing in California: Mrs. M. Smitherman of Eugene, Or., and Mrs. Teeple, of Battle Creek, Mich. Shortly before he died Mr. Baker expressed a desire that Rev. W. R. Powell, the Protestant Episcopal missionary, should hold the funeral service and Mr. Powell has agreed to do so. The funeral will take place from 335 Hassalo street, tomorrow at 10 A. M.
